Another catch: Houston, Texas, is HYU-st'n. But Houston Street in NYC is HOW-st'n. (Not a contradiction: they're named for different people.)

Date: 2021-07-25 05:46 pm (UTC)A bunch of my friends in the Boston suburbs live is Berlin -- with the emphasis on the first syllable rather than the second. My understanding (possibly apocryphal) is that this was a reaction to events in the 1940s, trying to distance themselves from Germany...

Date: 2021-07-25 11:41 pm (UTC)Of course it is possible to distance yourself from Germany, and nobody went so far as Berlin, Ontario, which in 1916 (a far more Germanophobic moment than 1940) renamed itself after the recently killed-in-battle Lord Kitchener.
