I think the fact that she wasn't public about being trans meant that some people worried that she wasn't writing in good faith. And that's a big problem with writing for an audience of (potentially) hundreds of millions - many of them will read you in as negative a light as possible, for a variety of reasons, and it only takes a few dozen people to make you feel the world is against you.
