Why ranking employees by performance backfires

I feel like for once the headline could have been more dramatic and been more correct. I mean, I think the problem is not so much "accurately evaluating performance backfires" as "mandating that half of the workforce are told they're failing and will eventually be fired guarantees that you never have a workforce who are all doing well and pulling together". Although I feel like that should have been more obvious in advance :(

That's the problem that has been arranged into existence by instituting these procedures, definitely.

Ideally as a manager you want a team where everybody is meeting expectations or exceeding them, and being forced to declare some people underperforming is so clearly counterproductive to me!

"The idea is to avoid “grade inflation” and force managers to have honest conversations with people who are sub-par." Like yes, not having those awkward conversations is a management failure. But I don't think stacked ranking with an imposed percentage of "who must be bad" is a solution to that problem!

Please, everyone, READ the transphobia item.

It's bang on the mark as I have good reasons for knowing.

Yet more evidence that the Government only care about academic freedom of speech when it's people peddling ideas they approve of, I see.

And when it's a view that is (a) toxic to good social order and (b) approved of by that Government...that poses other dangers. I'm seeing things going on in Québec right now, worrying things...pro-bigotry things...

Someone once said to me that there is already a an internationally agreed upon minimum corporation tax rate and it was zero per cent.

Need to have a bit of a think about tax incidence before going to far down the road of standardising a corporation tax rate.

(a)Countries have their own economic arrangements, including their rates of tax. A country that is solvent and well-run, or has a sovereign wealth fund, or 90% of the natural gas on the planet, is not in the same position in respect of its need to tax its population as, say, the US.

(b) One way to deal with the ranking nonsense would be to maintain a cadre of people hired simply to be the ones at the bottom.
