Date: 2021-02-01 03:26 pm (UTC)If the salient difference between Czech and Slovak is that Slovak has an umlaut-a and Czech doesn't - really? that is a distinction I never noticed - it wasn't the most helpful. The single most helpful thing was that Czech has the circle-over-the-u and Slovak doesn't. But it doesn't occur often in Czech, so it might not be on a given card. But I did find that Czech and Slovak had quite different patterns of how they used the same diacritics, and I learned to tell the difference from that. But the contents of that detail I no longer remember.

The idea of an adult making you keep secrets from other adults because he's The Teacher and has some power and influence over you is just a big nope for me. And I don't know what every kid thought of all the yelling and people throwing things at each other to make their point. As an introvert, quiet kid, I guess I would have felt really uncomfortable in these situations. Maybe even scared. Besides, school for some kids is a very safe space, sometimes the only one, because the rules don't change unexpectedly and they know what to expect when they follow or don't follow them. There's reassurance and structure in routine. I get what this teacher was trying to do. I'm not sure this worked for every kid. I'm sure it worked great for some.
