In Chile more than 20 years ago, divorce was also prohibited, but annulments were not, and could be granted for even minor bureaucratic issues, such as getting married in a parish in which neither the bride nor the groom was ordinarily resident. I was told that cautious middle-class couples (applying for an annulment cost money, obviously) made sure to have their weddings incude some sort of suitable procedural error, just in case. For couples lacking such forethought, there were apparently professional witnesses, who would, for a consideration, swear before the appropriate authority that such a procedural error in fact existed.

The masses settled for having children out of wedlock or separating informally. It did occur to me to wonder about the rate of spousal murder, but it seemed tactless to ask...

there is apparently a tronsatlantic divvide on whether one stage adultery or wife beating to get a divorce in the early 10th century. Of course it cost money and needed co-operation to go smoothly, and getting a divorce for *actual* abuse was very hard.
