I find it terrifying that 25% WOULD vote for him!

Bookshop.org? Why didn't I hear about this before. Turns out I don't need it myself; it includes the local chain from which I've been purchasing most of my new books. But what a great service for those who need it. I hope it has Amazon's depth of recommendations and forwards.

"Less than a quarter of UK voters would vote for Trump" - can you imagine asking US voters if they'd vote for Boris? Probably over 95% would say, "Who's that other guy again? Keir something? Who's that? How do you spell it?" I suspect you'd have to go back to Tony Blair to find a Labour leader most of them had heard of.

Of course it does. It's just that the lack of reciprocity amuses me. You do know, for instance, that Neil Kinnock is known almost exclusively in the US as "the guy whose life story Joe Biden plagiarized"?

Do you mean you don't know about the plagiarism? Kinnock gave this speech in the '87 GE saying (quasi-quote), "Why am I the first Kinnock in a thousand years to go to university? Were my ancestors all a bit thick?" (Answer: no.)

Anyway, Biden liked the speech and started quoting it, with credit, in his 1988 presidential campaign. Then he started quoting it as if it were he who was having these thoughts and he of whom the facts were true (which they weren't). Nobody has ever explained why Biden did this. Anyway, when the lie was exposed he dropped out of the race.

Later on the event came to be brushed aside as some sort of weird past anomaly in his career, like Chappaquiddick.

Instead of browsing your local bookshop then buying from Amazon, you could browse on Amazon and buy from bookshop.org or hive.co.uk :-)

In Hamburg, I was stunned to find they ALSO serve Edinburgh-style "sauce" (the thin watery vinegary brown sauce) with chips. (as well as the more German curry ketchup option).

They also do recognisable English-style fried breakfasts in Hamburg. Sailors. I blame sailors.
