It usually takes some time to get new minions comfortable with the idea that they are allowed to raise concerns about my random ideas. There were a couple of incidents early on, before I realised that for some people My Lightest Utterance Was Law, and therefore I had to (a) watch my words and (b) help them get over it.

Some (other) people in positions of authority do make it hard on themselves by treating any question or concern as a direct challenge to their authority. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. One of the many responsibilities of being a leader is to be able to make the distinction and act accordingly. Sometimes a well-timed "Um, I think there might be a problem," is the only thing between you and a chat with audit and compliance.

I started using the ladies' toilets at fifteen when an old boy in a pub I was in with a bunch of friends said 'S'cuse me, love, but do you know that was the gents you just used?'......... Even in the seventies with long hair, flares, clogs and t shirts all round, I just couldn't get away with it.
