Pleased to see some plans for festivals and other cultural things on the Forth shore. Anything that makes that part of the city attractive to live in and spreads out the tourists is a good thing.

That strikes me as an important part of the jigsaw. I was always struck by Bart's commment on trams that, unlike a bus, they are a real and permanent link and the capital effort gives people the confidence to believe that they can also commit.

I sometimes worry that Johnson is trying to make Brexit so incredibly awful that people want to rejoin at once

the brexit Golden Path.

Preferably with the loss of our stupid veto and joining Schengen!

I'm still thinking that Canada ought to sign on as a full member. CETA seems like a half-measure, particularly with the US in its present state...and across the North Pole, with Russia in theirs, as well.

I don't know. I thought that one clause had its genesis in worries about Canada getting too chummy with mainland China, but given Trumpist antipathy to the EU's existence...

i'm all for joining schengen, but not in favour of *every* EU project/goal.

human rights, freedom of movement, and frictionless trade, i'm all for, but the EU is just as capable of some stupid or overreaching/illiberal shit as any other government.

part of this mess, much like westminster losing touch with the wider country and getting punished for it, is the pro-integration types filing *all* euroskepticism in the same bin, rather than accepting that people wanting a different version of the EU is also valid.

Oh I agree, I'm not universally in favour and I wish we had been able to criticise bits of it without that fuelling the Brexiteers. But AFAIK, we have used our veto on things to protect our ability to run the country for the benefit of rich white men and screw over everyone else.

Thanks for the strike explainer! I know why I'm on strike, but it's much better when I don't have to make the words myself.
