I'm moderately convinced that luck is the dominant component of success in those terms, particularly when you account for different starting positions. Being well off to start with not only puts you further along before the stochastic stuff starts hitting you, it means you are in a better position to take advantage of positive lucky opportunities that require an initial outlay or carry significant risk (since you have a cushion).

How is the reimagined Star Wars significantly different from the original? (Which admittedly I haven't seen in about 25 years.)

Ha! I keep trying to tell people what happened when Romania pulled off the same stunt. They seem to think I'm telling horror stories. It's a curious claim however that it didn't lead to a population explosion, because that did happen. Maybe it was only a correlation, because the standards of living also skyrocketed at the time, as industry was massively overbuilt and huge swaths of people moved to the city. But either way, now we're feeling it as the head count has collapsed to what it should have been... and our entire social security system was designed around the previous state of things.

At least Americans hate social security in the first place. Can't miss what you never had, and all that.
