"Handschuhschneeballwerfer"
Date: 2019-05-15 05:22 am (UTC)Reading the linked post makes me wonder now if most people don't wear gloves to throw snowballs. From childhood, I may remember that making dense hard-packed snowballs is easier without gloves. It's been so long though since I've been in anything remotely like a snowball fight.
Reading some more comments on that page, it seems that I'm a Warmduscher (warm shower taker) and a Schattenparker (shadow parker) too.
I didn't immediately understand why these words are considered insults.
Based on this page and some others: https://www.mundmische.de/bedeutung/40111-Handschuhschneeballwerfer
That one is strongly gendered term; ie. an insult used against males who are perceived as being non-masculine, too soft and weak or cowardly, ie. "sissy". There are a lot more other words like them. Although from what I read, I can't tell if these are really strong insults, or if they are more often used in a humorous fashion.
This page:
https://www.efswiss.ch/de/blog/language/17-deutsche-worter-ohne-englische-ubersetzung/
says that most people wear gloves to throw snowballs, so those who don't must be really fearsome. Ergo, those who do wear gloves are weaklings.
None of these pages, though, mention it being about criticizing from a distance; that must be a specialized usage.
