I am intending to ask a pal of mine who is an environmental biologist what the timescales for insect species (a few, not all) developing immunity to pesticides and then speciating (re-radiating?) back in to the niches that are currently occupied by specialist species of insects.

Independent ad-blocking

You're linking to Independent stories which force me to switch off my ad-blocking to read them, there's no simple by-pass to avoid a big splash screen appearing. They also have autostart videos which is another thing that puts me off reading the Fine Article.

I have video autoplay turned off.

I didn't realise they had a big splash banner, mostly because I have a subscription to the Independent. I take it the adblock can't block the banner too?

Will have a play. But sorry, yeah, that's annoying. Will also look at other sources.

Having had a play, Adblock Plus causes the issue you mentioned, but uBlock seems to not cause it.

Which addon are you using?
