You might want to find Shut Up & Sit Down's review of Root. It's a lot less enthusiastic, while still liking many things about the game. If nothing else, it should make you feel better about not owning a copy.

> “If my child were to put its hand in a fire or run into traffic, I need to be able stop them with a smack.”

?? Don't see how a smack is going to stop them. You grab them. If they're not getting the message you keep hold of them. Downgrading trust & responsibilities for a toddler is REALLY effective, because they HATE it. As in, 'If I can't trust you to behave near a road, you're going to hold my hand the rest of the way.'

One of the most important things my mother taught me was: “if I say ‘STOP!’, stop, and then ask / argue, because you might be about to get run over / fall into a hole / get attacked by bees or whatever”. Of course the flip-side is that you need to reserve the full-blown ‘STOP!‘ for cases where it really is important; not just “you've slightly annoyed me but you're not in any actual danger”.

Yeah, I don't get how "a grab" is not the first instinctive thought over "a smack" unless you just love and can't wait to find excuses to hit your child(ren), anyhow.
