The Jews were early into the street sale of fried fish (a Jewish favourite that they realised others would also enjoy) and others did street baked potatoes.

The combination was obvious when you think about it! you already had the hot oil available somewhere. :o)

When battering the fish first came in I'm not sure about.

http://www.rachellaudan.com/2017/09/thoughts-on-this-tiny-little-country-feeds-the-world.html

The Netherlands comes out ahead on money for food, but it isn't a net exporter of food.

Also, it exports high value items like potato seedlings. These are being grown elsewhere, not eaten.

And the food doesn't taste like much.

I enjoyed Netherland Feeds the World.

The world being as it is becoming, my first thought was to worry about depending on agriculture that depends on unbroken glass. Even if you don't have cranky people with rocks (or really big kablooie rocks), you get hail. And more enthusiastic hail as weather extremes.

And - I just thought of this now - if wind turbines are bad for birds - what about glass between beak and bug?

I mean, we have to start somewhere, yes, and the whole March of Technology thing is cool. But people are shits.[1]

[1] - this is shorthand for a whole rant about some people destroying something as they try to get a piece of it, and some people destroying something because they can't bear that other people have nice things. I think the second group are mostly greedy wealthy conservatives, and their actions cause the deprivations of the first group who thus have nothing more to lose and so can't care that they are destroying more than they are getting. Ranty McRantface, indeed.

I seem to recall that the batter was initially used to change the way the fish cooked (partially steamed inside the batter) and then used as a way of keeping the fish together and it was not eaten but peeled off and discarded.

Bit like a Cornish pasty pastry then? It was originally used to keep mine pollutants like arsenic and lead off the food inside.

Yeah, definately more part of the crockery than a delicious and essential part of the actual meal.
