Well, if you're in that situation then you're almost certainly poor. So frankly, nobody cares.

Trump is up. Brexit is up. Austerity is up. It's clear that across large swathes of the USA and the UK nobody cares about the poor, and nobody is interested (specifically) in providing decent quality housing to them.

It's horrific, but as far as I can tell, it's true.

It depends on what you mean by "nobody". I think that even a well-funded government would take five or ten years to do something about this problem.

You sound like you are saying you don't care, which considering other things I read by you, I don't think to be true. You may not have a practical suggestion, but being part of the don't care crowd doesn't seem likely.

I am absolutely not saying I don't care.

I'm saying that society, in general, clearly doesn't care, and that if you don't have money to look after yourself, our friends with money to look after you, you're fucked.

Which is horrific, and troubles me very very much.

Do everything you can to move to a better location. Possibly set up a campaign to get money to help you.

Also, I recommend commenting at the slatestarcodex link and keeping an eye on other people's comments. There may be a technical solution.

I'm sorry. Based on other people's comments I've communicated badly.

I was trying to express my disgust and horror at the way that (American and European) society leaves people living in substandard housing, harming their physical and mental health, and behaving as if they have no value.

I was clumsy, and I didn't mean at all that I don't care. I care a lot. I just feel powerless against the people who set the rules that do this to people, and clearly don't care at all.

Well, phew. Haven't figured out yet how to change my under cabinet lights to LEDs, which I was reluctant to do in the first place because there's some concern about blue light emissions.
