Secularization ...

and they say: "... tolerance for individual rights predicted 20th century economic growth even better than secularization."
It took me a while to find out where the study had been published, and as I skimmed assorted articles it was interesting to read each writer's take-away: women's right were the driver, increased LGQTB tolerance did it, racial tolerance did it, etc etc.
Actually, the only thing certain, though other results are possible, is that secularization precedes economic development, and so it isn't increased prosperity that causes reduced religious adherence.
Increased regard for individual rights precedes economic prosperity.

Date: 2018-07-23 09:31 pm (UTC)I need to think about this some more, because "increased regard for individual rights" is not just focused outward, but also permits someone who was expected to "know their place" to aspire to other options because they also have an increased regard for their own individual rights.
More thought needed.
