Zach Holman makes the common mistake of assuming that the relationship between locations and Olson time zone names is static. My old rant on this topic: https://fanf.livejournal.com/104586.html

I think the EU has definately brought prosperity to the citizenry of the Eastern European accession countries. What their membership hasn't yet done is bring prosperity to the actual countries as quite a lot of the additional prosperity has gone to Eastern European who have moved out of e.g. Romania to richer EU countries. The people are here, paying taxes, working hard and their country of origin isn't seeing much of the benefit.

I'm not sure what you do with countries like Romania and Bulgaria where so many people have migrated to the western EU that their population is falling. I'm not convinced that they will spontaneously develop over a period of years or decades. I think it might be generations until relatively cheap labour and land and other factors bring restructuring and growth. I suspect that importing several hundred thousand German holiday home owners isn't going to be the answer.

It's one of the weaknesses of the EU that it doesn't deal well with cross border solidarity payments.

"The last three Star Wars movies were huge partly because they were event movies for moviegoers not used to seeing themselves in lead roles as Jedi Knights and Rebel leaders. Force Awakens’s post-debut legs (and it remains the second-leggiest $100m+ Friday opener ever behind Wonder Woman) were partially fueled by its “surprise” reveal of Rey as the Jedi hero, which was hidden from the marketing and treated as a surprise. Force Awakens was an event movie, especially for those who yearned to see themselves as the main heroes in that galaxy far, far away. . . .

In the end, Solo had little to offer that was fresh and had little to sell beyond being a movie that happened to be part of the Star Wars universe. But in 2018, an event movie featuring a generic white guy in the lead is that much less of an event movie, and merely being a big-budget fantasy spectacle isn’t enough. Giving certain demographics, a still too rare opportunity to root for heroes that look like them can help create demographically-specific event movies. Thus, from a certain point of view, white male movie stars may indeed be box office poison."

So this editorial is literally arguing that race is box office poison only if the movie is mediocre and that is woke somehow? That has some really insulting implications for everyone more than anything "progressive"
