Yes, it's a shame that Sendak didn't illustrate The Hobbit, despite a serious secondary-world consistency problem in the surviving illustration, which is the relative sizes of Bilbo and Gandalf. It's a charming piece nevertheless, and no Tolkien scholar I've discussed this with holds the size problem against the charm of the drawing.

The article doesn't seem to say that the bottom illustration is Tolkien's own, included I guess to compare Sendak's artistic skill with Tolkien's. Tolkien would hardly disagree with being called an inferior artist, though he might blister at the comparison being forced: he was actually a bit embarrassed at his publisher's desire to include his own illos when the book was first published; his comment was, "They seem to me to prove mostly that the author cannot draw."
