Date: 2017-08-16 11:31 am (UTC)How would it be possible to run a social media campaign involving Twitter hashtags that wasn't subject to possible abuse?
Free Speech and Twitter Abuse
Date: 2017-08-16 11:57 am (UTC)I'd say they were definitely in conflict. And also with the piece from a couple of days ago: http://cahwyguy.dreamwidth.org/364019.html
I'm fine with that - I don't think there's a single "right" answer here. Some people will passionately defend free speech on the grounds that government control of speech leads to Very Bad Things. Others will defend censorship of hate speech as vital to prevent Very Bad Things. Short of a time machine and the ability to run both approaches, I don't think there would ever be a way of telling which approach led to less badness in the long run. (And even then I think there would be space for reasonable people to disagree).
As for media campaigns - anything which allows a route for text submitted to individuals to be part of a marketing campaign, without having a sensible person vet every submission, is going to be gamed/abused. Either do it properly (and have people vet the submissions before making them public), don't do it at all, or be comfortable with people taking the mickey out of your campaign.

Date: 2017-08-16 11:31 am (UTC)By any chance, is the appearance of this old(ish) blog post on your links page in any way related to the appearance of a claimed proof of P≠NP on the Hacker News top-ten list yesterday?
(Thanks for reposting it, also – point 10, with the analogy about ocean-crossing, is one of those things I should have long since written down in my handy file of things I keep wanting to quote at people, and now I have another chance not to forget to do so. :-)
