Do people reach me more via Facebook or Twitter?

I posted yesterday about the media using "X defends against accusations" as a way of making you think that there are widespread attacks on them.

47 people clicked through to that post from Facebook. 5 from Twitter.

The 5 from Twitter all did so within an hour of the post going up.

The 47 from Facebook did so over the course of the following 12 hours (19 of them within an hour, but then an ongoing curve downwards).

Which indicates to me that Facebook does a pretty good job of knowing when something is interesting to my friends, and keeping it "active" for a while, whereas Twitter sweeps it away near-instantly, and unless it really grabs people it's gone.

And looking at my overall referrer stats, Facebook gets between three and six times the number of clicks that Twitter does.

(Just had a look at my actual LJ statistics too - yesterday I had 145 readers, of which 100-ish were reading via their friends-page and 45 were going direct to my posts/journal. Sadly I don't get the same info from DW, but Google Analytics tells me that 78 people visited that post on DW.)

Interesting. I see you have about 600 friends on Fb and about 1300 followers on Twitter, which makes the difference even more notable.

I know you always used to say you preferred people to reply/engage on LJ rather than FB or Twitter - is that still your preference?

Well, DW now, but yes.

Facebook still grates on me, and I have a preference for a service where I'm the customer.

(Twitter is terrible for discussion. Facebook a bit better since threading came in, but still not great)

Duh, I meant to translate to DW. Yeah, I like the context for discussion here (and on LJ as was) better. But the people to discuss with are all on Facebook - I see the corresponding post to this one on there has three people engaging substantially already. I nearly replied there until I remembered you'd said you prefer it here. This is the real lock-in network effect that Facebook is winning hands-down in my circles.

[The lack of a simple one-click 'yeah/Ok/like/seen-this-and-agree' response is a strength and a weakness of DW, I think.]

I think the ambiguity of the 'like' button makes for a less satisfying experience than a reply. It is hard to distinguish 'I saw this' from 'I like this' from 'I want to support you'

It's worth doing both though if notification is automated, as going via Twitter you get the people who don't do Facebook, like me (although I did miss that particular post).

Part of that longevity is FB showing users stuff that their friends interacted with. (A feature I hate.)

And that leads to the driveby shooting-off, where random friends of friends have fights in comments.

I use the FB Purity browser add-on which will block those from showing up in your timeline. I pretty much love it, although sometimes it will cause posts that were there to disappear when the OP comments on their own post.

On Facebook, I will click on links that look interesting and share the content of those links with my friends. You have some of the most interesting links.

I wish DW had stats. I can see my LJ posts are speaking into a void, but I have no real idea whether DW is any better.
