My children's school has a non-gendered uniform (or "dress code") and has done for at least 4 years. It shouldn't be that big a deal.

Yes, most schools in my (former) city went with that years ago for several reasons---among them, parents were fed up with uniform costs, and it was thought that bland school uniforms would reduce gang problems. Most seem to have settled on khaki or navy trousers and a polo shirt in a school color, with optional cardigan or pullover. Those are washable, unfussy items all readily available from a wide range of retailers.

I still remember the cost of uniforms making my mother look grim, and having to make do with the same ones for two years running because they were so expensive. And dry cleaning---well, we didn't have money for THAT.

Yep, the big UK supermarket chains all do basic "school uniform" pieces in a few simple colours, which is so much easier than having to go to specialist retailers.
