I think they're confusing many aspects of "socialism" and "communism". Sort of maybe a big mistake. Also considering the "yes/no" nature of the answers, they worded some of those questions a bit confusingly, I think (for instance, I am not "-33% liberal" - that's completely absurd, so they must have worded a few questions in ways in which I was bound to answer wrong for misunderstanding them, or else they put especially heavy weight on some of the more conservative views that I have).

Maybe because authoritarianism is considered a more conservative value that goes hand in hand with supporting the military, enforcing law and all that? I would associate it not just with conservatism but with certain aspects of communism as well so how they're parsing this is sort of beyond me.

So would I; and I would see Liberalism as being opposed to not just conservatism but to authoritarian forms of communism. Possibly it's using Liberal in the odd USan sense that kind of centres around socialism more than freedom? Or some kind of vague "progressivism" given that they're characterising the noun as "libertine" vs "traditionalist" rather than "liberal" vs "illiberal/authoritarian"

If the authors of the poll are USans then yes, *sigh*, it's highly likely. Years ago our Republicans decided "liberal" = "communist" and "socialist" *exactly* and there has been no budging them from that idea ever since. There's a good reason Repubs have been scientifically proven to be less intelligent than Democrats to begin with and one of those reasons has got to center around their lack of concern for uh, true facts, to put it bluntly. (The other, IMO, is their complete lack of introspection as such introspection might intersect with personally held political views - they are reactors, not mullers, thinkers, nor contemplaters).

Political philosophies are not easy to learn, compare with each other, or speak of intelligently without a lot of study and a lot of introspection and deep thought. I myself still confuse aspects of communism and socialism because there is so much real-life overlap. But liberlism as USans generally practice it is, in its purest and most well-meaning form, closer to socialism than it is to communism, IMO - an opinion I have tried to back up by reading up on both political philosophies as much as time and my own patience have allowed me.

The use of the word "libertine" kind of blows my mind. One dictionary definition - when used as a noun: "a person who rejects accepted opinions in matters of religion; a freethinker". OK, but you can be an atheist Republican or a Christian Democrat (*waves*) over here: we really do support complete freedom of thought, even if it won't make you too popular with any of the mainstream political parties our system currently supports.

Normally I skip taking polls for the fact that they are simply garbage but this one is so wrong in both some rather subtle and clearly outrageous ways as to make it quite fascinating to just sit around and pick apart.
