Date: 2014-01-08 08:42 am (UTC)The most current and relevant one is the growing trend of 'bring your own device' which is being driven by a corporate need to cut costs (reducing need for corporate owned smartphones and tariffs) and by users (who, generally, hate blackberry phones). Given the proliferation of personal smartphones in the workplace and cheaper, more competitive call and data tariffs available, BYOD makes a lot sense and there is a lot of movement and development currently in Mobile Device Management to add a layer of corporate security to personal smartphones used in the way. It's a really exciting area (to me) and opens the door to a number of really neat, powerful options.
The larger but more obfuscated trend, that is rumbling along in the background, largely unspoken about, is the amalgamation and homogenisation of global networks that will allow users and businesses to transparently and intelligently layer a private network right across several infrastructures and providers. It's hard to explain briefly here but the scope is breathtaking and is likely the next step beyond MPLS.
