Date: 2013-11-10 11:17 pm (UTC)The Isle of Eigg has already been doing this (using batteries to store surplus reneewables energy) for years. The island is not connected to the National Grid and, instead, generates all power for it's own local grid for it's population of ~90 people from wind, hydro and photovoltaics, all fed through a phasing system where surplus is fed into a big shed full of batteries. A big diesel generator is the last fallback if the batteries drain and there's not enough being generated by the renewables.
