On the one hand, I hate having to put a pound in a slot to get access to a shopping cart at the local supermarket, even if I do get it back when I'm done. It smacks of mistrust, and treating customers like children.

On the other hand, I never used to be able to find a cart, and since they did it there are always ones sitting waiting to be used.

I've never had to do that in my city, nor really ever had trouble finding a cart. But then I mostly shop at Costco and a Co operative where members usually do return carts.

I imagine it would help control costs at the other chain grocery stores though, if they adopted the method.

I always thought that the problem was kids stealing them rather than customers.

The other day, I was at a supermarket that uses them without any change, so I ended up lugging round three baskets instead, which was a right nuisance.
