That BabyMetal thing is the best thing I've seen in a long time.

Nice to know that all of our efforts to fill in the consultation positively appear to have borne fruit. :)

I can but hope that the religious nutjobs will do as promised, and take their toys and leave the country.

On a side note: I really dislike American brand names you have to read as a rebus. I instinctively want to read it as 'fill-er', which doesn't make much sense, rather than what I presume is intended, where the A is pronounced as an actual letter A. I dislike Apache Solr for the same reason: 'soller' not 'solar'.

Oh! I don't even notice, I thought it was some sort of trendy nonsense phrase, pronounced "chick fill AH!" :) Partly because I often fail to read the individual letters out, partly because I pronounce "fillet" with a "t", so I didn't notice what (I assume) it was supposed to sound like.

FWIW, I always used to be mildly puzzled by the prevalance of American companies called "Eee zed something". I knew that Americans pronounce Z differently, but I hadn't realised that it would matter here :)

What a nasty, weaselly attempt on the part of the Spectator to politicise FGM as a form of 'liberal racism'. A very unpleasant article - I wish you'd linked to a different piece of writing on the topic that concentrated on the issues and not on presenting the 'left' as tacitly condoning child abuse.

It's cool, I just really didn't like the tenor of that article. Yeah, Newsnight's doing a several-night special on it and Woman's Hour covered it too.

It also misrepresents what the policeman who was interviewed said. He didn't frame it as a human rights issue, exactly; he said that there were concerns that forced examination of young girls could constitute child abuse. Which is not to say that's an acceptable excuse, but he wasn't saying it was the human right of old women to cut their granddaughters up, which is how it's presented here.

"Inspection, in our terms, almost at times could be considered to be a form of abuse in itself, and we have to be very careful with the law in this country that we should not encourage behaviour towards a child against their will, albeit possibly in their best interests, but if that behaviour itself then amounts to something which is child abuse..."

Again, not lies - misrepresentation. It's framed by the writer as sensitivity to their 'rights' in the context of their right to practice their culture. Foy was making an observation that examination of girls could under current UK law be considered child abuse. Weasel words.

This. I have to say I found the article extremely misleading.

I heard a radio four interview the this week on the subject. Blaming the CPS for being too liberal is missing the point. The CPS can only pursue prosecutions it is asked to by the police. So when the article says "the CPS has not instigated one prosecution, let alone secured a conviction" this should be viewed in the context of the CPS instigating prosecutions in 100% of the cases where it could -- it has never had a case bought to it.

Also I don't think there is any significant number of people who are "liberal" who think FGM should not be stopped. Indeed there's widespread agreement that it must be stopped. The question is how to do it. The suggestions made in this article on how to do it seem extremely problematic to say the least.
