> No virgin birth. We simply don’t know or care who Anakin’s father is, and the subtle implication that it’s Palpatine is gone.

Whoa...! So subtle I missed it! Where's that?

> Hell, that’s why George Lucas made A New Hope first, he knew if he started with Episode I he’d never be able to complete the series.

I always assumed one reason was that in the 70s doing the droid armies would have been impossible. But I guess they could have been done, they'd have just looked like people in suits...

The implication there is that Palpatine used Sith Voodoo to create Anakin without sperm - not that he's his father.

OMG. You mean there's no such person as Darth Plagueis??? I was TOTALLY taken in by that! Damn the Emperor's lies!

You're right about the spelling of 'Plagueis'. For no apparent reason, I'd always assumed that it was 'Pelagius', like the 4th/5th century christian heretic.

I understand he spent a lot of time near the top of the sea. Might even have had a floating fortress, none of which indicated any tendencies towards villainy or anything...

I'm liking the Machette order for watching Star Wars.

I like the 'Alternative Suggestion' better, but then I sometimes think I'm the only person in the universe who likes Episode I.

The creator of the Machete order is arguing that the main plot arc of the series is centred on Luke. If you agree with that, then missing I makes perfect sense. However, if you think that the main plot arc of the series is centred on Anakin, then it makes more sense to include I.

I tend to find Luke a more interesting character than Anakin…

… but that may because I wanted to drop kick Anakin as portrayed as a small boy and I find anyone who has both access to Jar Jar Binks and light sabre and doesn’t combine the two in some creative, painful and de-earing ways to be morally bankrupt.

I think I to III were badly handled and it detracts from where I focus my attention.

Me too, it makes a heck of a lot of sense. I was part of a Star Wars marathon (4-6) a few months ago, but now I'm tempted to watch it again soon in machette order.

Perhaps the Captain (my two year old son)and I can watch them in machette order when he first sees them.

I think the story of how a cute wee boy who likes fast things nearly become evil - *just like his dad* will be right up his street.

While I appreciate the arguments put forward in the Star Wars post, I worry that someone who spends so much time debating what order to watch six films (that have an established viewing order to start off with) in is going to have his / her life ruined if he / she ever discovers the books of Michael Moorcock.

Less mad than the Moorcock are conversations about the Vorkosigan saga.

So many ways to enjoy those books.

Ha ha ha! Those are straightforward compared to Steven Brust's Dragaera books. Just try reading those in internal chronological order!

(You have to read Taltos twice, first reading the chapters and then reading the chapter openings; you have to read Yendi in between passes through Dragon....)

And once you've done that, try watching Doctor Who in internal chronological order...

I'm interested to hear what other people suggest about Vorkosigan reading order. My usual advice is "internal chronological order" (even though for almost everything else I recommend publication order), with the caveats that:

(i) I advise people to start with the Cordelia books if they think they'd prefer those or want to read the whole series anyway, but give them the first Miles book if they think they'd prefer a Miles book to a Cordelia book and aren't sure they'll read everything

(ii) I advise people to start with Warrior's Apprentice, with the warning that the later books are about more mature characters, but are less awesome if you don't already know the characters.

(iii) I generally think the short stories and stand-alone novels can go anywhere in the middle. (Although it's obviously better if the short stories are slotted in somewhere chronologically valid.)

(iv) I don't like Cetaganda as much as some of the others (though the worldbuilding is awesome), so I sometimes try to squeeze some of the short stories, or even the Brothers books, in first.

(v) It's probably self evident, but read Memory through to Civil Campaign chronologically and probably consecutively.

I highly recommend them.

Oh, I think publication order would be ok, I just think that this is one of the rare cases where internal chronological order works better.

Mostly that Barrayar was about the fourth one published but follows on directly from the first book. I read them in internal chronological order, helped by the fact the omnibus editions are collected in that order. I think you get the most out of the character development by reading them in that order.

ETA: I also highly recommend them, as you may have gathered from the fangirling on my LJ ;)

I find them dated and a bit shallow, but probably make the 'fun' class.

Machete order

The guy makes a strong case! I still haven't seen III (on account of the tiny incremental improvement between I and II) but if I ever do watch Star Wars with kids, or something, this is the order I will advocate.
