Date: 2012-02-17 12:52 pm (UTC)I think I'd also add that if I were a South American Indian living in Argentina I might snigger ironically at their claim to the Falklands based on British colonialism.
*I say "settlers" because the writer seemed to suggest that they were whalers who only occupied their whaling station part time.

Date: 2012-02-17 02:05 pm (UTC)I think I’d feel less like that if we (or anyone else) had turfed out some people who were actually living there at the time but the place seemed to be only occasionally occupied by whalers and fishermen from many and various places.

Date: 2012-02-17 08:18 pm (UTC)Of course, social networks choosing to filter content because media companies that they rely on for advertising or content want it as a condition of supporting their service (or so that they don't head to court over anime music videos) may well be a different matter

Date: 2012-02-17 08:24 pm (UTC)Under the DMCA I can put something up and it will just sit there - someone can then request it be taken down, and then Google will have to let me know and then comply within a fairly short time period (I think it's a few days, but many companies act a lot faster than this). I can then submit a "No, really, I own this." and then they can put it back up - and then it goes to court.
The penalty to claiming to own something you don't is pretty darn high, I believe.
And yes, companies have issues takedown notices for stuff they have no claim over, because they just don't care what gets hit by the flak.
