It's very cool but, having thought about it, there is maybe one window in my house that I could regularly stand anywhere near enough to use like this and that's frequently got washing drying in front of it. If it was gesture-controlled then maybe but touchscreen? I'm just never near one often enough for this to be viable. Windows are behind sofas, behind beds, on the other side of sinks, etc.
Mind you, mirrors tend not to have stuff in front of them.
Also, if you look at the thumbnail for the video, why is there a "Do not touch" sign underneath a touchscreen window? :)
Once this hits cheap there won't be a reason not to have every piece of glass in your house hooked up to the internet!
I can think of several.
Ranging from Planning Permission regs (a no-no in the New Town) through to what happens when the denizens of 4chan discover a hole in the security of the software update manager for the gizmo and star injecting 2 girls 1 cup into your windows. All your windows. After you've gotten rid of your curtains because you're used to your windows going opaque and dark at night.
Well, living on the ground floor, having this set to display something prettier than the flats opposite would be great. Having one with a screen on both sides so that the neighbours couldn't see in would also be great. Heck, if it could let light in without letting the neighbours see in that would be amazing even without being able to display the African veldt or depths of space out of my living room window.
Worse: what happens when your neighbours turn their windows round and start displaying 2 girls 1 cup to passers-by?
I know, most people won't do that. But some drunken students are stupid enough. And there's always the "oh shiiit, I've been hacked" excuse ...
What I want this tech for is my spectacles. So I can have built-in telephoto zoom and night vision and hyperspectral image refinement, while showing people raw bleeding eyeballs or empty eye sockets.
Now there's a piece of modern tech I can get behind. I don't know about all windows though as most of mine are hard to get to and not exactly needing this over a standard pane of glass and some shutters. However using this on a bathroom mirror or the kitchen window instead of a tv would be awesome! I wonder if it will appear any quicker than Microsoft Surface has though...
I want mine to show awesome scenes from around the world. And other worlds. While showing the people outside whatever amusing thing I want them to see.
