Doom spawned the genre, (after wolfenstein, ok, stfu). Granted.
And Deus Ex was a fantastic game.
And, (in fairness) the latest valve offerings have been abysmal (blue shift anyone?)
BUT!
Half life was the game which took the genre, and turned it into a generation. Half life took the FPS, and added puzzle, thought, and plot. There was never a tangible plot to an FPS before half life. It was usually an excuse for the action. In Half Life, you were less concerned about the action, and more concerned about the plot.
Ok, Deus Ex emulated that successfully, as did a few others (thanks to broin for introducing me to System Shock).
But Half Life's still the daddy. And if HL2 is even half the game that HL was, I'll be deeply satisfied.
I dunno. I found Deus Ex to be much less linear than Half Life. Half Life was good, and the plot parts were cute, but too much of the time you found yourself wandering around seemingly at random, trying to find the one non-obvious exit from the place you were in. Maybe it's just a tech thing. Or maybe it's that Deus Ex's plot was so utterly fantastic (have you replayed it since Sept. 11th? Eerie, very eerie). Also, from the screenshots, DE2 looks nicer than HL2. But obviously Doom 3 looks much better than either of them.
Are you forgetting that Half-Life is almost five years old and still stong? Plus the multiplayer game is what really launched it(including all the mods like Counter-Strike, OP4, NS,....)It seems that about 20% of the people that play Half-Life also develope new levels and/or mods. I don't know how true that is of any other game. By the way Andrew, what's your Half-Life nickname?
And Half-Life was the best game I'd ever played _before_ the Mods arrived for it. I haven't touched Half-Life itself in years, but I#ll still be out like a shot when HL2 comes out.
