So, does the Doctor always carry two sonic screwdrivers? Or was that a massive cock-up on he behalf of the production/continuity people?

I counted three. It was continuity cock-ups I think.

I'd have to watch it again, I just remember saying out loud last night "How many sonics has he got? That was the third!" and talking about how Gneil mentioned two but that was a decepticon to get Amy into the Tardis...

He starts the episode with one, which he gives to goo!Doctor. He probably got the TARDIS to make a replacement once they got back on board, which is what he used to make goo!Amy go all 'splody.

It was either a cock up, or it was something they didn't explain.

I need to rewatch it (again), but one theory is that the Ganger Doctor also had a sonic screwdriver.

Another theory is that he knew he was going back to when the Flesh first started, and was always going to create a Flesh duplicate of himself, and therefore, yes, took two screwdrivers with him.

Although I think it might have been a cock-up, I suspect this is what we'll be told.

I more meant if nothing is explained in the series and it was a mistake then that's what the writers will say.

The backing and forthing of that whole plot is pretty complicated, though - the more I think about it the more I think it must've been quite carefully put together. For example, presumably the Doctors were swapped over already by the time he had his 'why' headache - so does that mean that the Doctor had a worse headache than the Floctor?

I'm an adherent of the cock-up theory myself.

Given that the jacket in Season 5 wasn't a mistake, there is at least a fair chance that this isn't either.

Given that the Flesh could replicate bodies and clothing, there's no reason it couldn't replicate machinery.

If they can slip in clues like car number plates this will turn out to be a major clue that will be blindingly obvious at the reveal. And wasn't there some mention that "John Smith" could somehow reform?
