And yay, that Hoftstadter essay is awesome. Disconcerting, as it's meant to be. Also about 20 years old, but nonetheless worth drawing to more people's attention, because it's still very relevant...

That Google maps image is fascinating. I had no idea what it was, turns out it is a wind farm.

Good article. Lots of food for thought.

I liked the pie charts.

Yeah. I remember Hosftadter thinking a lot about it in the Metamagical Themas articles, I was curious to see how it held up, both to people generally, and to me personally. Most essays about X-ism written twenty years ago -- especially by a mathematician, mathematicians not always known for being the most socially deft -- I would expect to cringe at, but here I was surprised to find it still seemed to hold up. I was pleased it did, and pleased we'd made a lot of progress in the last 20 years, but sad the problems in the essay were still there.

(And, come to think of it, I am slightly more aware about how people who were concerned about racism might have seen it. I think it's totally clear he's saying racism is BAD, but I might understand that some people might still be made very uncomfortable by talking about it)
