Chatting to [livejournal.com profile] bart_calendar, who is shortly receiving a parcel from me, I discover that Montpelier deals with parcels in an interesting manner. When you register with the post office you give them your phone number or email address, and then when a parcel arrives they text/email/call you to let you know that you should pop down to the post office and pick it up.

As someone who has frequently had problems with parcels being delivered from Amazon only during working hours, and then collectable only from depots that are ten miles outside of town and visitable only by car, this strikes me as a very smart system.

I'm a big fan of CollectPlus in the UK - they work with a bunch of corner shops, and allow you to both send and receive parcels - Amazon will deliver to them, so I can have my Amazon packages delivered to either one a five-minute walk from work, or one a five-minute walk from home. Either option being far better than having the post wake Julie up or fail to deliver because we're all out.

My cousin Lucie has a kid who will be nine shortly, and she's wondering about book recommendations.

He so far loves the Inheritance Cycle (Eragon, etc), the Artemis Fowl series and the Alex Rider kid-spy books.

Harry Potter and Series of Unfortunate Events were both too scary for him, so we're looking for things a bit less dark than that.

She describes him as "Intellectual age of 12, emotional age of 5."

Thoughts?
