Bafflingly many people seem to think that Eleanor Rigby isn't sad. As the
lyrics are hideously depressing and its use at the beginning of Yellow Submarine is basically to show the miserable nihilism and certainty of death inherent in real life (before the fab four head off into adventures of psychedelia and fantasy), I really can't see what the objection is. It remains, of course, one of my favourite songs ever.
