So, first day at the new job today. Nothing really impressive to tell except that I'm not the oldest person in my group (that's Will, who's 38 and spent ten years as a research scientist before deciding to go into IT).
The day started with 30 of us getting our photo's taken for our ID passes. These passes are used for getting into the various Standard Life buildings (they have 28 in Edinburgh), clocking on and off (they have a fantastic flexitime system) and paying for food in the canteen (which has a variety of amazing foods).
The day was mostly spent introducing us to company culture and taking us through the way that the various bits and pieces work. The main thing that stands out is that everyone we talked to was happy and relaxed. I'm sure there are stressed unhappy people in the company, but I haven't seen any so far. They're obviously being kept in an underground vault of despond.
I now have a week of Personal Development Training before I get launched into 6 weeks of COBOL, JCL and DB2. W00t and all that. I'll keep you posted on anything amusing that happens, but I'm not sure that COBOL and amusing mix.
