I'm sure I mentioned this before in reference to Computer Graphics, where eventually you pass the point where improved graphics look more and more realistic and it looks basically like reality, only with the occasional glaring problem. This, in fact, is less engrossing than something which is less realistic, because people forgive cartoons and more abstract art for not being realistic.
The same appears to be true for people - something that looks like a toy is acceptable, whereas something that looks 95% human is just different enough to be really fucking scary.
