Aug. 27th, 2002 10:26 amI'm just reading about Everquest. When it was produced, it cost $5million, which shocked Sony so much they spun it off into its own company. It now makes $5million a month.

One-third of players 18 and older spend more time in the game world than they do at their paying jobs, according to Edward Castronova, a California State University at Fullerton economics professor who studied usage. Scarier still, some 22 percent said they'd spend all their time there if they could.
Chatting to Mike about it, he said:
Back in 2000 I worked at a company where about half the workforce played EQ to some extent, most who did played it most of their spare time, at work and at home. It was pretty scary and made me not want to play it.
