What the heck is the incandescent thing in the middle? It looks like the heart of a volcano.

That's central central London. And it's about half a mile across. The whole of central London is 5 miles or so across.

One of those light blips is presumably going to be Tunbridge Wells, if it isn't too small to register, since the train to London from Tunbridge Wells has its other end in Hastings.

Was looking at an OS map while chez Hugh and realised that I could -exactly- pinpoint where my mum and brother lived down south, since the golf course that our house backs onto is on the map, and since the road our road is a tributary (as it were) of is the border of a parish... it's awfully easy to find. It's a small small small small world.
