My cousin created a cohousing space in Den Haag a couple of decades ago, and I'm always jealous of it when I visit. It really does seem, in many ways, to be a much better way to live.
Something like c-housing is very common in Dublin. Because rents are so high - €1,000 - €1,500 for a small one bedroom flat in the city centre - many friends share bigger flats, with 5 or 6 people sharing, even hotbunking.
But I really like the idea of scaling that up even more. Stuff like Freecycle helps with sharing resources, but we're not quite there yet.
A few years ago in my area there was a small castle for sale (I say "small", but it had about 10 bedrooms!) for about £400k. Would have been awesome as a community thing.
