I think it is so unfair that Lucas won't release The 'Star Wars' Holiday Special in it's original un-edited format! By not doing so, George Lucas has sold out. We the fans deserve to see this masterpiece in its original condition, the way it was meant to be :-)
It's better than nothing, but I'm sure there will still be something to complain about: what if someone wants only the original, unaltered versions of the films and not the re-edits? Then they still have to buy these "attractively priced individual two-disc releases" which only include the original theatrical editions by way of "bonus material"
Presumably Lucas has gone back and used CGI to fix the bit where everyone was told "this is the last time the films will be available in this form".
I bet the Special Editions get tweaked again. And will the 'original' versions include the scene in Empire where a Snowspeeder rams a Walker, killing Julian Glover, a scene I am sure was in the time I saw it, but which seems to have disappeared even before the Special Editions came out?
Anyway, since I have the original versions on video and the post-Eps I-III tweak of the Special Editions, I don't think I'll be rushing out for these.
There were two VHS releases of the pre-special edition trilogy, one with "THX sound", or so I recall (and I believe I have both versions) (I don't know if the laser disc versions were identical or not).
Having realised I never watched the VHS versions, I haven't bothered buying the DVDs yet ... I'm sure there will be another "even more stuff" version with all six films, the holiday special, interviews with the third trooper from the left and a MST3K commentary track!
There's the original versions that up until now were only released on Video and Laserdisc.
There's the 20th Anniversary Special Editions that were released theatrically in 1997. These versions were then released on video.
Finally there's the DVD Special Editions from 2004 which were slightly tweaked again: they improved Jabba, changed the Emperor in Empire and stuck Hayden C in at the end. Plus a couple of other things.
You didn't try pausing or stopping the recorder at the exact moment it went to the advert break, with the title card then? Or was I the only one who tried doing this to get a 'perfect' Star Wars to watch again and again.
