Warren Ellis on Web 2.0
Jan. 7th, 2006 11:39 amIs there a Web 2.0 at all? Or is it just a buzzword to bring in new Venture Capital?
Yeah, there is. Web 2.0, at its heart, is an attempt to bind us back down to our desktops and force us to tidy up our shit and arrange it nicely. From del.icio.us to Structured Blogging to DLA to 47 Things and Backpack and all -- it's all an ongoing attempt to take the Wild West out of the web experience and make it all nice and orderly and organised.
I fucking hate it, to be honest.
Where do you think these tools are taking us?
Into a universal understanding of what it's like to have Aspergers, it would seem...

Date: 2006-01-07 12:33 pm (UTC)There isn't a Web 2.0.
There is however, for want of a better term, a Computing 5.0. Web 2.0 in all its manifestations is the first step of building a UI that can handle virtualised hardware and storage, distributed loosely coupled services, and process and workflow based dynamic deployment.
I find it fascinating watching the evolution of this UI. I don't think it's anywhere near ready yet - but key concepts of service orchestration, presence, and the intelligent client are starting to work their way through things.
Missing elements so far: local persistance, mobility, and (this one's the kicker) context.
An interesting 5 years coming up.

Date: 2006-01-07 12:39 pm (UTC)Source URIs that point to The Engine would have helped!

Date: 2006-01-07 01:19 pm (UTC)It was only when I wandered over to the Engine for my regular
procrastinateperusal that I realised that you had quoted an entire post. Not sure what I'm getting at here - whether it's a call for some formal form of quotations (OMG, it's structured blogging!) or for references.
It's probably just habits from too many careers colliding - years as a consultant, years as a journalist, years as a research engineer/scientist. Makes me a sadly confused Simon much of the time...

Date: 2006-01-07 02:04 pm (UTC)Put it down to deadline pressure and the fact that I need to deliver another ASP.NET 2.0 tutorial on Monday to go with the one I'm in the middle of (and the Q&A column). So just another 5K words to do this weekend.
I think I'll go lie down.
Oh no, I haven't got time!

Date: 2006-01-07 01:53 pm (UTC)Jesus ... I don't know what any of these things are but after reading your post I'm convinced they're all bad. :-)
I did get a bit excitable when I found I could go back to add tags to a post I made in May 2005 this morning. Does this mean I am more Web 2.0 than Wild West, and is there anything that can be done for me?
