7 So Menegroth, Nargothrond and the Dwarf cities would have been viable even without Dwarvish, Elvish and divine technology, nice to know! Am very interested in Derinkuyu underground's ventilation and waste disposal systems now...

Treasure it while it lasts, but https://12ft.io appears to bypass all paywalls at the moment, on the basis that newspapers want Google to index their content, so they let it inside their paywall. The article is here, if you don't have an FT subs.

Anyway, I saw a bunch of people dunking on this article on Twitter today, so I'll merely say regarding "there will be no levelling up" that it's arguably not as teleological as OP says. And, regardless, in Scotland we're lucky enough to have both Edinburgh (the political capital) and Glasgow (the economic capital).

But, regarding England, a bold proposal is to make Birmingham (or maybe Manchester) the political capital, while keeping London the financial and cultural capital. (This also addresses the problem of "how do we fix Parliament, which is full of asbestos, leaking, and tends to catch fire"?)

We went to an undergroud city when we visited Cappadocia - I'm not sure it was as big as this one, though.
