But the link is about someone coming out as male in the 70s and his family happily accepting it, to the point where decades later they forgot he'd ever been anything else, and paying for his surgery. So I was confused by you saying "much the same, I fear".

I suspect that the example was the lucky exception and I find myself wondering if 'male' might have been the thing- more acceptable in those circles.
That said, I knew trans guys who had equally awful experiences.
