Starmer on the EU

[personal profile] danieldwilliam 2021-04-01 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
I think Starmer's messaging on the EU is right.

It can't be a Labour Party lead campaign to rejoin the EU - they will get mullered at the next election. And the English re-join campaign can't and won't really kick off until after the next election. All that happens if Labour mention rejoining the EU in the next 5 years is that they lose the next election.

When the dust has settled and a re-join campaign has properly started up and proven popular the Labour Party might well find itself "forced" to consider a closer relationship with the EU. And Starmer knows this is coming.

I think that's probably priced in.

At any rate, the EU is going to be really hesitant about accepting the UK back in until the UK has resolved its internal divisions about Europe. The Tories would have to be legitimately reconciled to the idea of membership. Otherwise every election is going to be a random die roll on the Will The UK Oppose The Very Concept Of Its Own EU Membership For The Next Few Years table. The French would run out of patience pretty quickly.

Those local news headlines were great.

Those headlines are fabulous, and basically reflect utopia for a rather large number of people in the world, who would be absolutely delighted to live in societies where that sort of thing is what fills their days...
