I'm fond of telling people that "'gift' is German for 'poison.'"

It's basic maths that make being single a bad lifestyle choice.

Let's say major shit happens to people once a decade. (Bad health, injury, loss of income or death.) So, for single people, that's how often it happens. But for couples, it's twice as often but unlikely to happen at the same time. So when it does happen to one of them, the other is there to help deal with the problem.

Now which is the best choice for a bank to give a loan to? Obviously it's the couple, as there's a reasonable chance there'll be someone left standing when the shit hits the fan. As in someone to talk to as well as someone to bring in an income to pay back the loan.
