Actually, Tolkien spent some time considering whether languages spoken by immortals would evolve at the same rate as ones spoken by mortals. After all, if you can personally remember how the language was spoken 7000 years ago, wouldn't you speak more like that than someone to whom it's vastly distant ancestors?

He eventually decided that the Elves would let the languages evolve deliberately, for aesthetic reasons. He liked dialects and changing languages, so why shouldn't the Elves also like them?
