The cynical part of me wants to put up a poll regarding the news piece just below, so that people can then tick boxes marked "I'm sorry to hear that.", "If you need to talk you know where to find me.", "*hug*" and suchlike.

Thankfully, the more reasonable part of me knows that these words, while common and expected, are merely the conveyors of actual emotion.

And really, I do appreciate it.

It's hard to be helpful, with no information about the situation. So supportive is about as close as we can get.

I could have tried something like righteous indignation (That bitch! How could she!!) But since I don't know her at all, that would be totally inappropriate and offensive.

Or I could have tried humor....oh, wait, I am trying humor, nevermind. I'm often not very good at it, though.

So, you know, 'I've been there, and it sucks, and I'm sorry you're there right now' is about as good as it gets :)
