Pirates: In an adventure with bankers

I was most amused by this:

which is a Pirate flag flying over the original Royal Bank of Scotland HQ.

I'm going to blame Occupy Edinburgh, who are based about 50 feet away...

Somewhat sad that absolutely no papers picked it up.

Nope - it was in the papers: I didn't remember which ones, but one of the "Tomorrow's Papers" slots (either STV news or Newsnicht) had two different pictures.

Can't find it on Google News, though....

That is awesome. I wonder who did it.

If there were a LIKE button on LJ comments, I'd have clicked it!

It was in several papers. Certainly Daily Record and Scotsman covered it. However as it happened on Christmas Day it was somewhat stale news by the next print issues.

Not convinced less important stories appear in online editions! Flag went up about 21.00 on Christmas Eve, no idea when it came down but I don't think it would warrant high press coverage for what theyd consider 'a prank'.

Inappropriate by the terms of the Law of the Sea. RBS is majority-owned by the Government which has issued a Warrant of Marque and Reprisal to the Board of Governors thus any actions taken by that august institution which might on the surface appear to be piratical in nature are in fact legitimate commercial transactions. It's not robbery, rape and pillage if the Government says it's OK.

So you're saying that technically they're privateers, rather than pirates?

Trouble is that the best-known privateer flag seems to have been plain red, and that's been pretty convincingly taken over by the left wing since then...

there was also (or is also as i saw this last night), a cricket bat or bundle of fireworks shoved in the hand of the statue (Dr Chalmers?) at the end of George Street by St. Andrews Square.

It's not the former RBS HQ - which was 42 St Andrew Sq - but the branch at 36 SAS - a former Georgian mansion originally known (I think) as Dundas House.

It is however a wonderful picture.

Do you know if it was real or did someone Photoshop it?

Anyhow, I'm going to nick it and post it on Facebook, where my friends who used to work at RBS are more likely to see it...
