Not meaning to sound patronising by the way! More that I'm a statistician (of sorts) and have enough knowledge to barely grasp the concepts they plough through.
I have _no_ idea what the entertainment/media world is going to look like in 20 years, but I suspect that it will be quite different. I hope we find new ways of making money for books, but I'm not convinced.
Dammit. That reminds me I owe a decent response to cairmen on exactly that subject.
Movies and music are another matter, they make a lot more money, so they can afford to lose sales. But authors are generally below the breadline already. This surely pushes them into a place where it's no longer economically viable.
So I guess in the future, books will only be written by people who are already independantly wealthy. So quality will continue dropping across the board.
I was thinking about this just the other day actually. The way the internet, and Google, and wikipedia, have essentially pushed the value of everything down towards zero.
So many people now feel ripped off even if they pay 1p or something, because they are so used to getting it for free off the internet.
I mean, I don't know for sure, but I'd wager textbook sales have collapsed since wikipedia became the be-all and end-all of people doing 'research'.
Far from being the great liberator of mankind, the internet seems to be likely to create absolute stagnation.
It's true, we are used to getting pretty much everything on the internet for free. But the reality is that someone has to pay for these services, either via advertising or from a subscription of some kind.
Either that or they view it as a hobby and don't mind that it doesn't make any money. Which I think is whats happening.
Like there are an increasingly large number of people who write, who are happy to write for free because they think it will lead to them getting a big break. Which it won't of course, but in the meantime, it continues lowering the value for everything towards free.
I can't read ebooks. It's a cold, horribly impersonal experience. I bought Last Argument Of Kings [third of the First Law series] for Kindle, got through one chapter and HAD to go buy the book.
I can't help but wonder how many people feel the same way. If I could afford it [as used to be the case] I'd buy minimum 3 books a week
I've never had a go of an e-reader, so I can't say, but my gut feeling is that I'd probably agree with you.
Though the convenience of being able to carry dozens of books...
Mind you, to be honest, the main thing that makes me feel as if I might want an ebook reader, beyond the initial cool technology thing, is mostly because part of my brain is going 'Ooooh, I wonder how many torrents there are for books!'
I've been pleased to note a marked increase in eating out in film/tv of late - it's popping up all over the place. My favourite cunnilingus scene from my recent viewing was in C4's Misfits, of all places. Misfits in general strikes a really good balance between humour and intensity in its sex scenes that make for engaging viewing, even if the characters themselves are unappealing/barely legal.
I'm sure there was another one too but I don't remember it. Oh! There were a couple of pretty good Cat/Sam oral sex scenes in Lip Service. Mm, not sure I count niche lesbian telly the same way; you sort of expect cunnilingus in those (although with the L Word you were often disappointed).
Sorry to hear that Portman's orgasmface isn't up to scratch. Still, I'll reserve judgement 'til I've seen it.
Maybe I'll make a post about this. It's been a while since we talked about sex on my journal...

*warning, heavy stats content*
Might be wise to just look at the pictures and conclusion unless you've got stats expertise I'm unaware of :)

So, yeah. I can see piracy being a major problem.
