why would he do that when apparently the special editions are the REAL version?

I liked the "special" edition of Empire Strikes Back because, as I recall, it was mostly quite subtle. It wasn't INSERT HAM-FISTED CG COMEDY HERE like the other two

Because even the old film of Cludo/Clue could manage that when it came out on DVD.

Oh, I agree that it'd be good. But the impression that George Lucas has given in interviews I've seen is that whatever the latest version of the Star Wars films is, that's the version he's happiest with and wants to be the one remembered as the "real" one.

I really like the Blade Runner final cut set that comes with all the versions of the film.
