Buncha germans made a Warhammer movie. Games Workshop would love to let them show it. But can't - because under german law (where the people are) they have inalienable rights which would mean they ended up owning some of the ownership of Warhammer. Which, strangely enough, GW aren't willing let them have.

Andy Jones, legal and licensing head for Games Workshop, said this law confers rights on the creators of works that cannot be given away.

This means that the creators of Damnatus cannot assign their rights to Games Workshop even if they wanted to.

But by sanctioning the release of the film without this "assignment" Games Workshop would essentially be giving up the title to the Warhammer 40,000 intellectual property.

Met [livejournal.com profile] accordingly in the Auld Hoose after gaming on Sunday for a quick drink and ended up comparing quality of phone cameras. The photos actually came out well enough to stick up:
I shoot her on an N80

She shoots me with a Sony Ericsson

Just watched this and was thoroughly frustrated. On the one hand it's got note perfect performances from a wide variety of great actors, fantastic cinematography of New York and some amazingly scripted and directed scenes. On the other hand it drifts into sentimentality and unbelievability just often enough to leave a terrible taste in my mouth. Don Cheadle's wife lacks so much screen time that she ends up as a two dimensional place holder for "Wife who doesn't understand" (even though the ending shows that it's not actually her fault) and frankly the film could have done with an extra half an hour to let the emotional growth happen at a reasonable pace while we got some more background on characters who went from being glimpsed parts of the background to being of major importance to the plot in no time at all.

This kind of film frustrates me far more than any number of bad movies because you can see the fantastic movie just gagging to get out. In fact it reminds me of Crash (which has the same plus points but also suffered from similar problems), but doesn't pull things off as well. I'll definitely be looking out for future things from the writer/director, because he's so close to getting it right that it hurts.

I bookmark things I like over on del.icio.us as AndrewDucker. I then feed that over to LJ as [livejournal.com profile] andyduckerlinks.

I mention this largely because having people read my stuff makes me happy.

And also because twice this week I've noticed my links turning up on other people's journals and blogs - ones that I like. Which may well be coincidence, but even so, it makes me happy.

I think there might be something wrong with me :->

Some things just make me want them very, very badly.

I'm currently trying to spend no money, but not clicking BUY on this page is about as easy as not having that next hit of crack.

I've managed it for now - but I'll be back...
